In March 2024, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah approved a Rs5.5 billion agreement between the Sindh Police Department and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) to initiate the first phase of the Smart Safe City project in Karachi.
This phase focuses on enhancing security in the high-risk "red zone" and the airport corridor by installing 1,300 CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition and automatic number plate recognition systems.
The project, initially proposed in 2016, aims to bolster public safety through advanced surveillance and monitoring technologies.
The approved agreement signifies a pivotal advancement in Karachi's efforts to address urban security challenges and improve the overall safety of its residents.
