Flying electric ships are on their way to NEOM in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has ordered eight P-12 electric hydrofoil ships from Candela, a Stockholm-based company. This order is the largest in Candela's history and will see the ships operating within NEOM, a large sustainable city being built in the northwest of the country.

The Candela P-12 ship, which was introduced last year, is scheduled to start running in Stockholm's public transportation system in the fall of 2024.

What sets the P-12 apart is its computer-controlled hydrofoils, or underwater wings, that allow it to glide smoothly above the water. This design makes the ship extremely energy-efficient, consuming 80 percent less energy compared to traditional vessels.

In addition to its efficiency, the P-12 can reach speeds of up to 25 knots, which is about 29 miles per hour. It also has an impressive range, able to operate for more than two hours on a single charge.

These features make the P-12 not only the fastest but also the longest-range electric passenger ship currently available.

The decision by Saudi Arabia to incorporate Candela's P-12 ships into NEOM's water transport system highlights the country's commitment to sustainability and innovative technology.

As NEOM aims to be a model of future cities with minimal environmental impact, the inclusion of these energy-saving ships aligns well with its goals.
