Switzerland Plans to Install Solar Panels on Train Tracks for Eco-Friendly Power

Switzerland is leading a new clean energy project by placing removable solar panels on train tracks. This unique idea, developed by the Swiss start-up Sun-Ways with support from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), will start testing on a railway track in Neuchâtel in 2025.

Solar Panels on Train Tracks

The main goal is to produce solar power by using the space already taken up by railway tracks. Instead of building solar farms on new land, which can be costly and impact natural areas, this system uses existing infrastructure to create energy.

The panels can be easily installed and removed, making them practical for maintenance and potential adjustments.

This approach is both environmentally friendly and scalable, meaning it could be applied to railways around the world. If successful, it could inspire other countries to explore similar ways to generate clean energy without disrupting landscapes.

This project has the potential to change how solar energy is produced globally by offering a solution that doesn’t need extra land, is simple to maintain, and uses infrastructure already in place.
